“The design and mission of Shuttle pushed NASA to be more inclusive”, said astronaut Ellen Ochoa. With the advent of the new space era that allowed science to be conducted in a way that could not be done anywhere else, NASA opened astronaut selection in the late 1970s to scientists and engineers in addition to the traditional pilots. American women and ethnic minorities were also now eligible for selection, as Mission Specialists (MS).
