Maritime tugboats image dehazing is a challenging problem due to the presence of large areas of sky in images. To ensure the safety of tugboat navigation, the local enhancement contrast (LEC) method is uniquely proposed in this paper. To address the issue of the extensive sky area in maritime tugboat images, the contrast enhancement method initially applied as the foundation to dehaze the image. To achieve the closest approximation to the original image, the processed images are refined by the contrast limited adaptive histogram equalization method to improve the significant portion of the sky region in maritime hazy images. The results from experiments demonstrate that the proposed LEC method not only reduces fog coverage in maritime images effectively, but also preserves edge details, and produces a clearer and more natural recovered images for tugboats.
