This chapters deals with the hydromechanic forces and moments in some further detail. After a brief summary of the functions of hull and appendages a discussion is given of the hydrostatic forces and lateral hydrostatic stability characteristics of a sailing yacht. This is followed by discussions on the hydrodynamic side force and heeling moment, the different components of the hydrodynamic resistance and the effects of heel, balance in yaw and trim-in-pitch on the hydrodynamic forces. Finally, there is a discussion of dynamic stability and sea-keeping properties.
