In this paper, considering an irregular convex deployment area and the limited communication distance of multi-UAV, to promote the localization performance of radiation sources in a surveillance area, an optimal multi-UAV deployment problem is studied aiming at the Time Difference of Arrival (TDOA) passive positioning system. The considered problem is solved by a multi-UAV deployment method based on Double Coordinate System Particle Swarm Optimization (DCS-PSO) algorithm. Firstly, an optimization problem is constructed by taking the average Geometric Dilution of Precision (GDOP) of the surveillance area as the objective function, considering the limited communication distance and the irregular convex deployment area as the constraint conditions. Then, a modified particle initialization method is studied to initialize all particles within the irregular convex deployment area. Moreover, DCS-PSO algorithm based on the modified particle initialization method is proposed simultaneously to solve the optimal multi-UAV deployment problem. Finally, the simulation results demonstrate that the modified particle initialization method is successfully accessible to initialize all particles within irregular convex deployment area, show that DCS-PSO is valid and robust under different irregular convex deployment area, and prove that the DCS-PSO algorithm steeply outperforms external illuminators (EI) method based on penalty function.
