Cruise ships are equipped with swimming pools of various sizes and shapes, often with inclining bottoms and artistically shaped shallow wading areas. When the period of the ship motion is close to one of the natural periods of the pools, wave motions in the pools may get violent, and the pools must be closed to the passengers. Hence, it is important to be able to assess the natural periods and the wave motions in the pools at the design stage, so that unfavourable geometries can be avoided

This paper presents a method for assessment of wave motions in pools based on a combinations of model tests and ship motion calculations. Focus is on wave motions where water is about to escape from the pools. Transfer functions are established between the waves at sea and the wave elevation along the edges of the pool, by means of physical 1-DOF model tests combined with strip theory calculations. This enables us to calculate in which sea states the water will start to spill from the pools, and one can then easily assess the operability of the pools on a specific route. Predictions of limiting sea states are compared with experiments where the pools are exposed to 6-DOF irregular motions, and the agreement is reasonable.
