In a high-head dam project, due to the limitation of the storage capacity of the reservoir, it is necessary to discharge excess water downstream, which is the so-called “flood discharge.” Some of today’s mega-projects can have dam heights in excess of 300 m, maximum flood discharge flow rates exceeding 50,000 m3/s, flood discharge flow velocities over 50 m/s, and total flood discharge powers reaching 100,000 MW (Jia 2016).
