Abstract Commercial aircraft predominantly rely on “bleeding” a fraction of their engine compressor air to provide a high-pressure air stream to keep the cabin at a pressure well above the outside air (during cruise). This chapter offers a glimpse into what happens when a fuselage opening is not latched properly. The large pressure difference between the air in the fuselage and the low pressure outside the aircraft can break open doors if improperly designed or latched. This chapter examines the effects of “explosive” decompression on a United Airlines Boeing 747 flying out of Hawaii.
