Within the context of space 4.0 and looking ahead at future space exploration programs, this chapter sets the context in which space innovation and exploration activities are being conducted by the Space Agencies and the private sector in the main spacefaring nations. One instrument analyzed to implement these activities in ESA, is the one of partnerships between actors with complementary knowledge and capabilities. Each ESA Directorate has started implementing initiatives along these strategic guidelines, and the chapter offers concrete examples, focusing mainly on the “Innovation in Action” program set out by the ESA Space Exploration teams. This initiative sources ideas for the upcoming exploration destinations such as LEO, the Moon and Mars, following four key steps: fertilization, seeding, selection and implementation. First outcomes from this activity are presented in terms of new partnerships created.
