Abstract The paper discusses a new criterion for evaluation the precision of linear approximation when treating optimal control problems. The latter relates the deviations of the functional of quality of motion from its optimal value to the error of approximation. The system of quadratic equations for determing the vector of parameters "c" of the approximating plane is derived. Application of this norm is considered involving an ascillatory second order plant. The synthesized near-optimal controllers were computer simulated and the corresponding time responses are given.
