In the near future it will likely be necessary to control the emission of fine dust from the brakes of automobiles. In this study, the feasibility of a reusable ceramic material filter for collecting fine brake dust was investigated. A numerical analysis was performed to model the behavior of the fine dust and collection efficiency, and these results were verified through a brake dynamometer test. The results showed that fine dust generated from the pad leaves the disk earlier since their density and diameter are larger, while particles with less density and smaller diameter rotate along with the disk. This makes it important to capture particles that escape through the filter housing trailing gap. In the brake dynamometer test, the collection efficiency was found to reach 53 % by mass. The results of the study confirmed the feasibility of the ceramic filter as a brake filter. In the future it is expected that using a low-permeability ceramic, such as ceramic foams with whiskers, will increase the collection efficiency and total collection amount dramatically.
