This paper puts forth a path-planning approach for a 500 kV transmission tower drone inspection based on the honey badger optimization algorithm. This algorithm mimics two foraging actions of the honey badger, demonstrating strong overarching search abilities and capabilities to bypass local optimal. In this study, a function model is developed with the aims of minimizing flight time, maximizing image quality, and pylon coverage. Two inspection methods are employed for inspection, and models are optimized using a honey badger optimization algorithm. Simulation results suggest that the second inspection approach described in this research can provide a safe flight path for unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) inspection while more effectively balancing the three performance parameters.
