This work presents an assessment of the technical potential of pneumatic propulsion as an alternative to conventional propulsion technologies. The utilization of compressed air coupling with land, air, and maritime vehicles in previously published literature is reported. Although pneumatic power is constrained by operating pressure and storage volume, its utilization in air, land, and sea applications can be justified if the operation is limited to fixed routes. These fixed routes provide predictability of important operational parameters, such as compressed air tank sizes, operating pressures, and coupling with propellers. The coupling can either be directly from air motors to propellers/wheels through a gearbox or via coupling air motors with generators and then to electric motors that operate propellers or turn wheels. Compressed air technology is promising and could mitigate the negative effects of conventional or all-electrical propulsion technologies, especially concerning emissions related to component production (engines, batteries, etc.) as well as vehicle operation.
