A close-coupled canard design has been evolved by considering the various performance demands of carrier-based fighter aircraft like launch and recovery capabilities from carrier deck and to improve cruise, manoeuvrability and supersonic acceleration requirements. The canard design has undergone various design iterations, like its position with respect to wing, canard sweep and its area to meet the desired performance. A simplified fuselage and 50° wing sweep have been considered to carry out the sensitivity analysis of various parameters of canard using RANS-based CFD methods. The low aspect ratio (AR) swept wing family of canard with a biconvex airfoil has been used for the current studies, based on the outcomes of in-house project studies, and also the generic assumptions drawn from the shapes available with various contemporary fighters. However, the effect of canard area, sweep, AR and its position w.r.t wing has been considered for sensitivity analysis. The selected canard design has shown better characteristics in aerodynamic performance throughout the flight regimes and also shown better controllability margins with improved handling qualities. However, in this paper, the benefits attained due to canard design have been restricted to only low speed subsonic region, particularly the carrier launch and recovery aspects. Overall, the canard on delta wing aircraft improves the lift and pitching moment characteristics, which can be further enhanced by proper positioning of canard w.r.t wing. From the position sensitivity using CFD analysis, the optimum position of canard has been identified which satisfies the desired aircraft requirements. For shape sensitivity, three canard sweeps, of 45°, 50° and 55°, have been studied for a given wing sweep of 50°, and it is observed that higher canard sweep increases the CLmax of the aircraft. In addition, an edge matching canard, which means the leading and trailing edge sweep angle of canard is as same as wing, has also been explored to improve the stealth characteristics while retaining favourable lift and pitching moments. Finally, an increase in canard area shows some improvement in lift but a large increase in pitching moment which, in turn, will increase the hinge moment requirements of actuator, and therefore, the nominal canard area is selected for the aircraft.
