Abstract Wide-scale implementation of electric buses imply the necessity of making decisions concerning assignment of electric buses to serve specific bus lines. Ecological issues can be one of the criteria of electric buses allocation to the transport tasks. Due to the fact that electric buses do not emit harmful substances in the place of their use, it is possible to analyze the route of the line in terms the traffic speed zones through which the route passes. The article states that the avoided emission of pollutants emitted by a conventional bus can be measured by the indicator of stops of buses in the traffic speed zones in relation to the number of kilometers driven. This paper presents the methodology to determine traffic speed zones available for city bus, the formulas to determine this value and the exemplary values calculated on the basis of measurements conducted in Polish city Jaworzno.
