Simulations on the ATRA Research Aircraft have been performed to investigate transonic tail buffet phenomenon. The main focus hereby is set on the interaction between the periodically separating flow from the wing and the horizontal tail plane. Therefore a high resolved hexahedral block has been included into the wake area to propagate the turbulent structures. Two different approaches have been used to perform the simulations. First an unsteady RANS (URANS) approach including the Spalart Allmaras turbulence model was applied where the complete turbulent content is represented by the model. Secondly, a Delayed Detached Eddy Simulation (DDES) was performed. It is shown that this method is able to represent the turbulent spectrum also at higher frequencies and a stronger influence on the horizontal tail plane can be found.
