The drastic increase in the usage of private vehicles led to immense traffic congestion on urban roads. A bypass road is considered an effective and safe measure for traffic to avoid congested areas and reach the destination. The access points to the bypass play an important role in terms of congestion and safety. Road safety is a matter of great concern which provides fast, efficient, and safe movement of vehicles for better social connectivity. The safety performance of roads as well as intersections can be examined by conducting Road Safety Audits (RSA). This study focuses on the identification of different intersections in the Kollam bypass and assessing the safety performance at each intersection. The safety performance is assessed by conducting RSA with the help of accident data. The present study aims to identify the bypass’s critical junction and suggests the best possible improvement measures for the identified critical junction. This will improve safety and reduce the control delay, thereby the Level of Service (LOS) at the identified critical junction gets improved. Ayathil junction is identified as the critical junction and suitable improvement measures are suggested. One of the best measures for improving the Ayathil junction is to make the junction into a Median U-turn Intersection (MUI) after dividing the entire highway. The design approach for providing the MUI is suggested. Moreover, the anticipated quantum of improvement by providing a median U-turn intersection is determined by comparing the LOS of the same with a conventional signalized intersection.
