With an increasing presencePresence of online or e-learningE-learning environments, the study of motivationMotivation to learn within these online environments is more relevant than ever. This study is a systematicSystematic literature review that aims to find emergingEmerging trends within the topic. This review was done using tools such as Harzing’sHarzing Publish or Perish, ScopusScopus, MAXQDAMaxqda, VicinitasVicinitas, and VosViewer, and AuthorMapper. BibliometricBibliometrics analyses were done using these tools to show the connection between motivationMotivation and educationEducation in an online learningLearning environment. These results are visualized using maps and word cloudsWordcloud. The results of the analysis showed an unsurprising interest in facets of motivational theoriesTheories such as intrinsic motivationMotivation, self-efficacy, and subjective task value. Also, these results showed the emergence of new subtopics within online educationEducation, like mental health and physical fitnessFitness. It is imperative to learn how these key ideas interact within an online learningLearning environment because the proper implementation of e-learningE-learning environments would allow institutions to reachReach a much larger and diverse student body. Finally, the research into motivationMotivation within online learningLearning environments done by institutions has led to a newly emergingEmerging theme of gamificationGamification of online coursework. These findings are highlighted in the literature review and subsequent discussion.
