The authors of the article suggest a way to compare the development of countries’ rail systems. This is calculating the geometric mean from the normalized values from the ratio of the length of the railways to the country indicators. This approach is illustrated by the example of European railways. The results of such an assessment show that the most developed railways are not in the countries with the longest railway network, but in those countries where there are many railways compared to other indicators.
