Steering is an essential function of any vehicle, manned or unmanned. Modern wheeled vehicles employ steering systems perfected in the last 250 years. In this paper, the most common steering linkages and steering boxes are inventoried, and an attempt is made to identify the main contributors to their development. For example, the trapezoid steering, originally meant for horse-drawn vehicles, was invented independently by Erasmus Darwin in 1759 and by Georg Langensperger in 1816. The bell-crank steering linkage was first used by A. E. Bollée in 1878, and the rack-and-pinion steering mechanisms was invented by Gustave Dumont in 1922.
