Abstract The Iridium venture had the privilege of introducing the international community to the novel concept of commercial mobile satellite communications. It fared well until competition demonstrated that alternative solutions could be developed as efficiently, with a faster and higher return on investment. This paper tries to identify a few lessons that can be learnt from the Big LEO adventure and to assess the possible evolution of other low Earth orbit satellite ventures that still intend to envelop the Earth with constellations of satellites. It also explores the development of smaller satellite systems that may be an interesting alternative.
