The article attempts to get an answer to the question of whether coal port projects can have a positive impact on the development of the regional economy. A theoretical and methodological platform has been studied, which is used in analyzing the interconnections of the port and the economy of the region and compiling its own algorithm for assessing the economic effects. In this vein, an assessment of the development of the main leading ports of the Russian Far East—Vanino and Vostochny over the period from 2005 to 2017 was made. It was established that the coal specialization of the ports served as a source of socio-economic conflict and contributed to reducing the interrelation between the ports and the region. An assessment was made of the prospects for the development of the ports of Vanino and Vostochny over the medium term. The emphasis is on coal projects, including the Free Port of Vladivostok. It was concluded that in the future, the coal ports of Vanino and Vostochny will not have a significant impact on the port-region: the economic effects will gradually decrease, and the negative consequences will increase.
