Abstract The world’s urban population is expected to double by 2050. As the planet becomes more urban, cities need to become smarter. Major urbanization requires new and innovative ways to manage the complexity of urban living; it demands new ways to target problems of over-crowding, energy consumption, resource management, and environmental protection. It is in this context that Smart Cities emerge not just as an innovative modus operandi for a future urban living but as a key strategy to tackle poverty and inequality, unemployment and energy management. At its core, the idea of Smart Cities is rooted in the creation and connection of human capital, social capital, and information and Communication technology (ICT) infrastructure in order to generate greater and more sustainable economic development and a better quality of life. Smart mobility represents one of the six dimensions of a smart city. It involves both environmental and economic aspects and needs both high technologies and virtuous people behaviors. Smart mobility is largely permeated by ICT, used in both backward and forward applications, to support the optimization of traffic flows, but also to collect citizens’ opinions about livability in cities or quality of local public transport services. The aim of this paper is to analyze the Smart Mobility initiatives like part of a larger smart city initiative portfolio and to investigate about the role of ICT in supporting smart mobility actions, influencing their impact on citizen’s quality of life and on the public value created for the city as a whole.
