Abstract The paper discusses the strategy of Górnośląsko-Zagłębiowska Metropolis (GZM) for the reduction of environmental impact of public transport operators. The evaluated environmental impact of the public transport is substantial and constitutes a serious health hazard for the citizens of the Metropolis. GZM carries out diverse actions for the reduction of these threats and promotes initiatives which involve not only public transport operators but also users of their services. The actions are performed in compliance with national and European Union (EU) environmental directives and regulations. Important for the success of these actions are finance sources especially EU funds. The most important action is the promotion of electro mobility that is elimination of diesel bus fleet and funding the purchase of electric buses and extending the charging infrastructure.
