Joseph Engelberger and George Devol founded the first robotics company, Unimation Inc., in 1956. Engelberger was the entrepreneur and Devol the inventor, and their goal was to develop industrial robots. Unimation was to become the largest robotics company in the world, and it pioneered the worldwide growth of industrial robots.

Devol and Engelberger initially developed a prototype hydraulically driven robot arm that was programmable. It could pick up small metal letters and spell out small phrases. The prototype was introduced at a trade show in Chicago in 1961, and the era of industrial robots was born.
