Abstract Command and control of a maritime aircraft is a considerable challenge, to which there are a number of strands. Data comes into the aircraft from a number of different sensors and from other aircraft and ships — this data has to be processed and fused to provide a coherent picture of the situation. A single mission for the aircraft can have a number of conflicting goals which have to be balanced to provide the maximum overall military effectiveness. The Commander of the aircraft has to produce a series of tactical plans to meet these goals in the changing situation. Providing tactical decision support in this environment is most effective when assisted by knowledge-based techniques to understand the military situation and provide plans based on that situation. Providing this support in real time, reactive to changes in the situation, introduces further challenges.
