Abstract In this paper it is presented how the results of classical elastic finite element method can be used if the problem is solved in the stress space. Both, the elastic and elasto-plastic analysis are formulated as mathematical programming problems. Such a kind of feasible direction method is presented the steps of which have a mechanical meaning as well. A thick curvated shell element was computed by this method.
