Abstract In October 2003, a Long March 2-F (LM-2F) rocket launched Shenzhou 5 (Figure 1.1) and China’s first taikonaut, Yang Liwei, into low Earth orbit (LEO). Although the flight lasted only one day, and decades separated China’s first manned mission from those of the Russians and Americans, the event was significant, as it heralded China as only the third nation ever to develop an independent manned spaceflight capability.
