While Gemini 5 took center stage during the late summer of 1965, there were three other related back stories to the events unfolding in space. As the Gemini program gathered momentum by trialing rendezvous and docking techniques, spacewalking and longer duration missions, it also provided confidence for the ever-increasing pace of the Apollo lunar program. Parallel to these efforts, the US Department of Defense was planning its own separate, and mostly classified, human spaceflight program under the guise of the Manned Orbiting Laboratory. Meanwhile, the ever-surprising Soviets were perceived to be waiting in the wings with their latest space spectacular to regain the lead in space for themselves. The headlines across the world featured all the triumphs and tribulations from the latest developments in what was emerging as a perceived race to the Moon between the United States and the Soviet Union.
