A reusable launch vehicle travels through a spectrum of Mach number as it descends through the atmosphere till touchdown. In this study, winged body re-entry vehicle which was launched atop a solid rocket booster by ISRO is taken as the study configuration. The vehicle is a double delta wing-body configuration, of ISRO, which successfully descended into the atmosphere after a sub-orbital flight and splashed down into Bay of Bengal as planned. The vehicle experienced high supersonic Mach number at high altitudes and decelerated through supersonic, transonic and subsonic Mach numbers. The flow simulations have been performed over the study configuration using Fluent software at typical supersonic, transonic and subsonic Mach numbers. CFD-predicted aerodynamic flow features and longitudinal aerodynamic characteristics of re-entry vehicle with angle of attack along with limited validation are the subjects of this paper.
