This paper compares and analyzes two vehicle wireless communication technologies: dedicated short-range communication (DSRC) based on IEEE 802.11p and 3GPP Rel-14 LTE-V2X, which is recently standardized by the cellular industry. To select a more suitable technology in different application scenarios, we provide a brief overview of difference in the physical layer frame structure and channel model between DSRC and LTE firstly. Then, we evaluate the performance of the two technologies in highway scenarios through system-level simulation. The performance metrics that we evaluate are Packet Reception Ratio, Packet Delivery Ratio, Signal to Interference plus Noise Ratio and Data packet delay during resource selection. Simulation results demonstrate that the difference in the communication reliability between DSRC and LTE is small at short communication distance. LTE can guarantee more reliable communication when the vehicle density is low. However, the performance of DSRC is better than that of LTE when the vehicle density is high. Furthermore, the influence of channel attenuation (CA) and hidden terminal (HT) of DSRC, and the influence of RB collision (Col) of LTE are analyzed.
