Abstract This paper presents a simulative approach to determine train delays due to stochastic disturbances in railway traffic such as technical failures. The approach is based on the modelling of the railway traffic and the impacts of technical failures. A discussion about the modelling is given. The model is capable of simulating the traffic processes both under normal conditions and in case of technical failures. With respect to the determination of train delays and the delay distributions, the investigation possibilities with the model are demonstrated by an example. Some potential applications of the approach are summarised.
