This paper proposes a method to evaluate the time to collision (TTC) by the flow traveling through the road work zone based on the traffic conflict technology. The reliable big data are extracted from observed videos and the generalized exponential function is designed to explore the probability of the potential collision. The probability of rear-end collision when vehicles passing by the designated work zone is discussed in detail, in specific, in the scenario of an urban four-lane road work zone. Finally, four macro factors are exhibited, which have significant impact on the TTC including observed speed, flow, distance and following vehicle type. Conclusions are drawn that the vehicle speed is faster, the traffic volume is greater; meanwhile, the closer to the work zone area, the rear-end collision probability is higher.
