Due to the strong magnetic field environment for the track carriage beam of the suspended permanent magnet maglev rail transit (SPMMRT) and the new form of wheel-rail relationship, the existing axle counting system is vulnerable to electromagnetic interference thus cannot be worked. In this paper, an axle counting system based on fiber bragg grating (FBG) for SPMMRT is designed. By analyzing the force between the track carriage beam and the new type train bogie, the maximum strain position in the area of installation can be found out, so as to determine the best installation position for FBG axle counting sensors. The axle is counted by monitoring the change of micro-strain on the side wall of the track carriage beam caused by the weight pressure of the train bogie through the axle counting point. After the installation and test of the FBG axle counting system in the field, it can accurately measure the axle and judge the direction. Then the FBG axle counting system is used as the train occupancy inspection signal equipment to participate in the train safety control system.
