As transportation environments become increasingly challenging, the conditions of rolling contact between railway wheels and tracks have also deteriorated significantly. PanSteel has developed high-performance steel rail (PG5) for application in heavy-haul railways. The PG5 rail exhibits superior wear resistance and rolling contact fatigue (RCF) resistance, as well as good weldability, which can be applied to flash-butt welding and thermite welding. The average carbon content of the PG5 rail is 0.95%, the tensile strength is 1310 MPa, and the Brinell hardness is 390 to 450 HB. This paper outlines the comprehensive process from steelmaking to rolling, and provides a detailed description of the microstructure control guidelines and fundamental properties of PG5 rail.
