With the gradual migration of iron and steel companies from inland areas to coastal areas, our country’s steel layout of “heavier in the north and light in the south” is also changing. Therefore, this paper selects the Yangtze River Delta as the research area and analyzes the current status of imported iron ore in the Yangtze River Delta and the composition of water transportation costs. This paper constructs a model with the minimization of transportation cost as the objective function, so as to intelligently plan the waterway transportation of imported iron ore in the Yangtze River Delta. Based on the calculation results of the model and the rate of change of unit cost from the four major iron ore import source countries to the ports in the Yangtze River Delta, the results of smart planning are as follows: iron ore imported from India and South Africa can basically be transported directly; imported iron ore from Australia, only Taizhou Port needs transit transportation; importing iron ore from Brazil needs to choose Ningbo Zhoushan Port as a transit port. In addition, largetonnage ships should be used for the transportation of imported iron ore, which can reduce unit shipping costs; ports that require load reduction for transit transportation can use the direct river-to-sea method to reduce the higher costs of transit transportation.
