Collision accidents of container ships occur occasionally, in the past decades. Due to the fast speed and large opening deck of container ships, it is easy to generate serious consequences in the case of collision. This paper studies the dynamic response, structure failure and energy absorption of container ships in collision. The material failure criterion affects the response and failure prediction of hull structure under collision scenario. The hull structures are subjected to complex stress state under collision load, so the failure forms are different. In this study, two material failure criteria are investigated in the container ship collision simulation. One of them is a constant failure criterion that is simple in form and widely used (Hereinafter referred to as CS criterion). The other one is a dynamic failure criterion which considers the biaxial stress and strain rate effect (Hereinafter referred to as D-BWH criterion). According to the simulation results, it is found that the response of collision force, energy absorption and damage degree of the side structure are different. The CS criterion underestimates the crashworthiness of the ship structure.
