This paper follows the planning, design and operation of an automated assembly system incorporating vision. A full analysis of the performance characteristics of the system is undertaken, with a view to assessing the viability of using a vision-guided robot in a production environment. The results indicate that the assembly accuracy and repeatability are within acceptable limits and that with further development such a system could be used in a production plant.
