Aviation history is littered with the debris of sophisticated projects that failed, at least in part, because inadequate initial thought was given to fundamental airworthiness considerations. The paper reviews a number of such projects with the intention of using past experience to derive lessons for the future and as an introduction to a consideration of the airworthiness of new technologies.
