A mathematical model is presented for the accumulation of water on the vehicle deck of a damaged ro-ro (roll on-roll off) vessel. The model leads to a simple theoretical relationship between the mean elevation of water accumulated on the deck above the sea level, freeboard at the damage opening (including negative freeboard) and the significant height of relative motion due to ship motions. The two characteristic values are indispensable for the theoretical justification of the static equivalency method, used for the assessment of damage stability of ro-ro vessels. Standard deviation of the elevation of water is also provided, derived from the theoretical analysis.
