This paper presents a new and cost-effective design for automotive engine mufflers using the swirl phenomenon. The new design results have been compared with the commercial mufflers with and without a catalytic converter and have shown that the noise level is competitive at high rotational speeds, that there is a reduction in back pressure up to 60 per cent which ultimately reduces HC and CO, and that there is an improvement in combustion efficiency of up to 2.11 per cent.
