Since the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics issued the first position paper on space debris 25 years ago, recognition of the threats posed by debris in Earth orbit and the need to act now to protect the future space environment have become widespread. This new awareness has been matched with positive actions by spacecraft and launch vehicle designers, manufacturers, and operators. As a result, a common set of space debris mitigation policies and practices has been forming at both the national and international levels.
