This paper covers the design, development, and testing of a low maintenance, nonfouling ignition system, and outlines the history and effort behind this program. A contactless switching mechanism and a low voltage ignition system were combined to approach an ideal system. Results to date indicate that the goal can be attained by using these techniques.
