The inlet dynamic effect on the volumetric efficiency of a four cylinder engine was investigated, by a method of one cylinder activation. It was found that the inlet pressure profile consists of a shorter and a longer periodic component, each of which is determined by the design factors of the intake system. It was also seen that the volumetric efficiency mainly depends on the inlet pressure during the short period before the intake valve is closed. Therefore, the relationship between the volumetric efficiency and the inlet system design factors was clarified by separately examining the behavior of these two components during this period.
