The many materials and processing methods currently available to the design engineer present an almost overwhelming array of possible combinations. The selection of materials for individual components of complex aircraft structures such as engine nacelles is critical to the technical and economic success of the product. While proper use of these materials and processes requires the development of individual experts for each, responsible design of the integrated product and its individual components depends on the design engineer and his knowledge of these varied materials and processes. This paper presents information from a variety of detail component and major assembly designs demonstrating material and process options available to the designer and aiding in understanding appropriate applications of each. Specific examples are based upon several commercial aircraft engine nacelle programs and include Resin Transfer Molded (RTM) graphite/epoxy thrust reverser blocker doors, graphite/epoxy thrust reverser cascades, a variety of other structure concepts, and a variety of molded plastic fairings and detail parts.
