The United States Army MERDC has a continuing program to develop and update a family of portable and/or mobile power generation sets for use by the United States military services. In the past decade, a number of new permanent magnet materials have been developed, far exceeding the energy products of earlier materials. Recognizing the potential of these new materials, and looking toward a new family of light-weight power generation sets, a feasibility study and preliminary design were completed for a 100 kW, 60,000 rpm rotating field permanent magnet generator.
