In this paper we discuss ongoing research on video sensing at Siemens Corporate Research and Siemens Automotive's Advanced Development group and their impact on automotive industry in the areas of driver assistance, and occupant detection. Two innovative concepts are presented: the first one dedicated to video surveillance of the vehicle surrounding based on an omni-directional sensor, and the second one dedicated to occupant presence detection, classification, and positioning using active stereoscopic vision techniques for air-bag control.
