An overview of the Advanced (Automotive) Gas Turbine Program, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy, is presented. The origins of the program and its driving forces are discussed. The central position of ceramic structural materials in the AGT program is pointed out as well as progress in the development of such materials up to the present time. To continue essential R&D in the area of ceramic materials and their application to the gas turbine engine a new program has been introduced. This is the Advanced Turbine Technology Applications Program (ATTAP). A plan for conducting ATTAP is offered in some detail.
