This committee was started by the coming together of two groups, the American Gear Manufacturers Association (AGMA) and the P/M gear industry with its representative, the Metal Powder Industries Federation (MPIF). The AGMA has been for many years the primary developer of gear standards for the American gear machining industry and had been so recognized by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). At the same time, the P/M industry has become an increasingly important manufacturer of gears. Although P/M gear manufacturers have used AGMA standards in their work, there had been little formal contact between the two groups as represented by common memberships.
