CURRENT-production gasoline engines with their greater power and efficiency call for new engine oils having improved performance if the advantages of these new engines are to be fully realized. The right oil can reduce knock, preignition, and spark-plug fouling, thus increasing engine efficiency. Reduced mechanical and corrosive wear, greater engine cleanliness, and improved starting performance, oil consumption, and fuel economy can also be effected with specially designed lubricants. This paper describes how one new oil formulation, a blend of selected distillate oils with V.I. improvers and a new detergent-inhibitor combination, has been designed, built, and tested with these desired performance properties in view.
