All present-day passenger car automatic transmissions employ epicyclic or planetary gearing. This is not new but goes back at least as far as the Model T. This discussion will be directed to two areas of this type of transmission, the first part being the radial bearings in the planet gears. The second part will deal with the thrust bearings used in the geared section of the transmission and the torque converter section which is a part of the transmission package.
